Microsoft strikes again! Yet another feature, stolen away from the geniuses that brought us online e-cards, funny flash videos & mini flash games.

Yes, Microsoft Silverlight is a runtime platform for browser-based Internet Applications providing a subset of the animation, vector graphics, and video playback capabilities available in .NET 3.0.
The plug-in already runs on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. And yet again, Linux was thrown out of the window… or rather “Windows®”.

Silverlight is a direct competitor of Adobe Flash and JavaFX from Sun Micro (launched a few days after Silverlight).

Soon everyone will be able to write Silverlight Apps, and this is where the security issues will start cropping up “…but not this time” said MSDN Blogger ‘Shawn ’. He has published a Security Cheat Sheet that pin points the programming security features of the application and Security Models. More info here.

When asked about it’s security, Microsoft’s Scott Guthrie answered:

We'll make sure Silverlight is very secure, so when the final release ships you'd be able to use it for a home banking application.

From my angle it looks good enough, anyway, it’s still in its pre-release stages so there will be a lot of improvements after these stages so let’s hope for the best ;-)

As for the applications, there is quite an activity going on. If you would like to test drive some games and animations check out: http://silverlight.net.

For the System Requirements review this link.

Let's hope they actually adhere to this mindset --- actually I wonder if this technology will take off in the first place -- hmmm

We'll be posting an article on the flops of Silverlight a week or two after its release :-P
