Welcome to maltainfosec.org

This is the first post on this newly registered website, so I will begin by briefly explaining the idea behind this maltainfosec.org

The aim of the group is to create a bigger awareness on the island for the need of information security in various areas of computing and to create a local community of individuals with unique experiences who are ready to share information with other persons in need of professional advice.

“** Information security professionals have been instrumental in changing the mindset of executives and gaining management buy-in that security is an enterprise-wide problem, not just an IT issue.”

Due to a lack of general awareness on the topic, my colleague and I have decided to start off this google group hoping to try and achieve some of the ambitious points quoted above.

In addition to this, and to further strengthen my point on the topic, I felt the need to do something like this following a seminar I recently attended at the University of Malta given by Professor Guillermo Francia wherein he discussed the integration of Information Security into our CS/IT University curriculum. Dr. Francia is a Professor of Computer Science, Mathematical Computing and Information Sciences at the Jacksonville State University, Alabama. Having the pleasure of meeting Dr. Francia firsthand, we both agreed that there is a need for a bigger awareness especially now-a-days.

A very strong argument Dr. Francia re-iterated was that security as a concept can and should be introduced as a module/chapter in most (if not all) aspects of an IT curriculum. So for example if there is a module taught on databases then there should be a slot of allocated time dedicated to good databases security practices.

Whilst all of this is good, until now (and to my knowledge) there aren't any local websites to bring together people with a common interest security therefore whether you are student, an upcoming security professional or indeed a security professional, I invite you to visit our website and google group and share any information you might want.

Meanwhile, of course any suggestions, links and referrals are more than welcome.

Spread the word around to anyone who you feel can contribute to our efforts!

I applaud the initiative that the two of you have shown, the island of Malta suffers from the same security issues that plague the entire world. I feel that this is an effective way of raising awareness among your people.

I look forward to reading this blog in my daily routine.

    Congratulations!

  2. Shay Harding says:

I definitely agree that not enough schools focus on security-related issues excepting basic information security. That is slowly changing with a recent degree program from SANS Institute at http://www.sans.edu/

I also agree with Will in that this is a great idea to increase security awareness.

  3. Matthieu Suiche says:

    That's a very interesting initiative.

    Congratulations to you!
